Assessment of Biochemical Markers in Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome Patients in the Niger Delta Region, Nigeria

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome is a chronic endocrine disorder with clinical manifestations of oligomenorrhoea, amenorrhea, hirsuitism, ovarian dysfunction, and multiple cysts, affecting many women reproductive age. PCOS the primary cause ovulatory infertility worldwide. This study assessed concentration hormones in polycystic syndrome patients attending tertiary hospitals Niger Delta Region, Nigeria. Three hundred fifty infertile premenopausal aged 20 to 40 years were recruited; comprising 250 presenting complete Rotterdam diagnostic criteria, 100 apparently healthy who serve as control. Blood samples collected analyzed for hormone levels using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent Assay. The result showed significantly increased estradiol, luteinizing hormone, LH/FSH ratio, testosterone, prolactin when compared control subjects. Progesterone Follicle-stimulating lower than normal However, there was no significant difference observed serum dehydroepiandrosterone levels. Furthermore, revealed that insulin resistance level (p=0.000) higher BMI group. positive correlation between resistance, negative FSH. estrogen Luteinizing ratio. affirms interrelationship thus, promoting hormonal disorders patients.
